Why the build matters

Built for central Indiana clay & freeze-thaw

Central Indiana's clay soil drains slowly, and freeze-thaw winters push on anything built over it. A patio that looks great in June can heave or settle by March if the base is wrong. When you compare quotes, ask what's under the pavers.

  • Deeper compacted base. Local guidance calls for 6–8 inches of compacted base on clay, versus about 4 inches in sandier markets4.
  • Drainage planned up front. The patio should slope away from the house, and downspouts shouldn't dump onto it.
  • Edge restraint & polymeric sand. Commonly recommended in freeze-thaw climates to resist washout and weeds.
  • Permits & utility locates. Walls over 4 ft need a permit in Indianapolis5, and every dig starts with a free Indiana 811 call.

Questions homeowners ask

Are you a contractor?

No. Indianapolis Patio Pros is a free referral service. We connect you with vetted, independent local contractors who do the work; your contract and warranty are with the contractor.

Does it cost anything to use your service?

No. It's free for homeowners and you're never obligated to hire anyone. Participating contractors may pay us a referral fee, which doesn't change your quote.

What areas do you serve?

Greater Indianapolis: Marion, Hamilton, Hendricks, Boone, Johnson, Hancock, Morgan and Shelby counties. That includes Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, Noblesville, Zionsville, Whitestown, Avon, Plainfield, Brownsburg, Danville, Greenwood, Franklin, New Palestine, McCordsville, Greenfield, Mooresville and Shelbyville. If you're not sure, send a request and we'll tell you if we can help.

How much does a paver patio cost in Indianapolis?

Angi's 2026 data puts the Indianapolis average at about $3,637, with most homeowners paying $2,297–$6,699, or roughly $8–$24 per square foot installed. These are estimates; your quote depends on size, material, access and site prep.

How do you vet contractors?

Before we refer a contractor we check basic information, such as the City of Indianapolis licensed-contractor list where applicable, current proof of insurance and public reviews. A review isn't a guarantee, so we also recommend getting a detailed written contract.

When is the best time to plan a patio?

Most building happens April through October. TheFatBook reports Indianapolis hardscape bids run about 5–12% lower in winter, so planning and booking in the off-season can help.
